Cell Biology vs Systems Biology

Cell biology is the integration of molecular biology with biochemistry and physiology explaining how the living cell grows, divides and evolves.

Systems Biology is a paradigm defined in antithesis to the reductionist paradigm.

Two recurrent motifs in cell biology are highlighted :
1. The interconnectedness of physiological, organizational and regulatory processes in the cell.
2. Strategies to intervene in these complex processes to manipulate an organism for scientific, biotechnological and medical purposes

1. Description of the mechanisms describing the flow of information

1. The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology deals with the detailed residue by residue transfer of sequential information. It states that information cannot be transferred back from protein to either protein or nucleic acid.

Transmission of information is not one-way.

2. Describe key regulatory points in the transcription, post-transcriptional, translational and post-translational control

There are no programs at any (other) level.

3. Describe the mechanism behind selected bacterial networks

There is no genetic program.

The Defense of GM Crops

Christopher J Leaver describes the benefits, in reply to Lord Melchiott's statement to the House of Commons Select Committee on EU Affairs, of using genetic engineering crops :
1. Gene crops can be recalled or can be killed by herbicides.
2. Genetic engineering is more precise than conventional breeding.
3. Transgenic pollen spread does not always lead to pollination.
4. The effects of Bt corn on monarch butterflies and lacewings are not serious.
5. Herbicide resistant crops reduce the usage of herbicides.

Mae Wan-Ho says that
1. Terminator crops spread male sterility.
2. Genetic material from viruses and bacteria are the predominant tool for creating transgenes.
3. Pollen spread is a major contributor of transgenic contamination.
4. Viral promoters can be transferred through horizontal gene transfer to the human genome and cause the expression of human viruses and cancer.
5. Glufosinate ammonium and glyphosate, which are used against herbicide-resistant crops, are toxic to humans. (WHO and the CRIIGEN)

first post!!

Hi all :

First day of our book club blog. The purpose of this blog is to get is to promote reading - and we hope to get all people like us together. We will write about things that interested us, intrigued us, and made us think -- and we will also present you some wonderful spicy book reviews.

We are :
